Newsletter Friday Feb. 23, 2018

Math:  The students took a quiz today on lessons 1-4 in unit 4 which covers place value, rounding and comparing decimals and reading and writing decimals in words, numbers and expanded form.  Next week in lesson 6 students will be introduced to the coordinate system where they'll use ordered pairs to plot and identify points on a grid.

Reading: We've started our novel unit on the classic Folktale "Maniac Magee" by Jerry Spinelli.  Figurative language will be a main focus in this unit such as similies, metaphors, hyperboles, and idioms and we'll continue to apply whole-group comprehension strategies, vocabulary, and character comparisons.

Writing:  Students are hard at work writing their drafts for their opinion writing pieces about whether or not they think students should get paid for getting good grades.  They'll be revising, editing, and publishing their work next week.

Spelling:  In unti 20 next week we'll  be studying words with suffixes such as -ed, -ing, -ly, and -ful.  They'll take a "cloze" test on Friday.

Social Studies:  Next week in lesson 2 of our government unit we'll be comparing the competing plans for the constitution, they'll learn about the Great Compromise and the goals of the constitution.  Kids are working in groups to create a Google Slide presentation on key terms in this unit.
