What's going on in Harsey's class...

Math:  The kids practiced finding the area of rectangles with fractional side lengths.  Next week, we will explore the concept of volume by comparing 3-dimensional objects.

Science:  The students took a quick assessment on The Scientific Method on paper and completed a formal experiment.  We continued our study on plant an animal cells this week and created cell models today. See the pictures that I posted earlier today of the kids in action!  Next week, we will begin reviewing for a quiz (it will probably will be given on Thursday) so look for a study guide to be handed out early in the week.

LA:  Our first spelling dictation test was given today on unit 1.  The students have the list for unit 2 in their homework folders.  We studied common, proper, plural, singular, and possessive nouns...I plan to begin our study of verbs next week.  The students enjoyed writing workshop...they wrote their first "quick write" using a "story spark" image and became familiar with independent writing timing and routines.

Reading:  In whole-group, we studied the structure of a poem, the author's point of view, and started discussing character and setting today.  Our read-aloud book, "Deep & Dark & Dangerous" by Mary Downing Hahn has the kiddos on the edge of their seats!  We've been preparing for small-group reading by building independent reading stamina.  The kids have been able to read for 34 minutes non-stop.  I am lucky to have a classroom full of kids who LOVE to read!
