What's going on in Harsey's class....

My math class:  Unit 2 focuses on partial-products & U.S. traditional multiplication as well as partial-quotients & U.S. traditional division.  This week, we'll solve division number stories and practice interpreting remainders.

SS:  The students have been learning about the first English colonies of Roanoke and Jamestown.  They've learned why the English founded a colony on Roanoke Island, the mystery of their fate, and the reasons for the conflict between Spain and England at that time.  They also learned about the problems that Jamestown encountered and how they solved them making them the first successful colony in the New World.  Next week, we'll discuss the motivations of the Pilgrims in coming to North America, how Native Americans helped the Pilgrims, and the significance of their Thanksgiving celebration.

Spelling:  The students took their unit 8 dictation assessment on Friday.  There will not be a test next week.  They'll get their unit 9 list on Wednesday.

Writing:  After lessons on adverbs, students wrote a scribble story including adverbs and reviewed adjectives from the week prior.  They took an assessment on both parts of speech.  Next week, lessons will focus on prepositions....we'll write poems identifying prepositions in each stanza.

Reading:  We started our first non-fiction novel study "Frozen Man" by Peter McCarty.  Lessons are broken down into comprehension discussion, vocabulary word study, and written responses using Google Classroom to prepare for typed responses on the PARCC test later in 2016.

Small-Group Reading:  Most groups are finishing their first fiction novel study in a literature-circle format.  They'll be assigned shorter instructional-leveled non-fiction books following.  Lesson focuses will be on identifying the main ideas and understanding text structure.
